WHAT DO WE DO?
We have transcription teams, who work in pairs transcribing Fermanagh records which is done with the agreement of Enniskillen Castle Museum, who permit our volunteers to use a bespoke room for this purpose. A complementary coffee is on offer to our volunteers from FGC!
We are a friendly group who encourage members to become volunteers in assisting with our administration, IT, committee meetings, production of publications and talks, as well as helping out at FGC events and social activities.
We run a Face-to-Face service at Enniskillen Castle, on a pre-booked basis, to assist visitors with their Fermanagh family history research. This provides a free signposting service to visitors, highlighting relevant locations in Fermanagh pertinent to their enquiries: e.g. churches/graveyard; along with useful information on Fermanagh records. Our bespoke information leaflets are available on request to assist you with useful websites and genealogical tips.
For those requiring more detailed/expert genealogical assistance we may direct visitors towards our associate professional genealogists. Please note they are outside FGC remit and may therefore incur a fee.
We are looking to train more volunteers to assist with this service. For visitors who wish to receive help at our Face-to-Face meetings please book ahead. Email enquiries to:
fgcenquiry2012@hotmail.com This service is monitored by a volunteer.
WHAT DO WE GIVE?
Our free time. We are not generally asked to do more than two afternoons a month in the centre. Some volunteers also help out answering email enquiries or Facebook posts, from home. Helping with this work is particularly good for broadening one’s knowledge and expertise.
WHAT DO VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE?
As registered volunteers we enjoy a friendly, non-taxing activity, learning new information and skills, while meeting lots of interesting people, from all over the globe. We have access to some of the main genealogical sites. This allows us to direct our visitor enquiries to records that may help them with their research. However, this facility is also helpful for our own research. As a group, we join together to help and teach each other new knowledge and skills.
Volunteers are part of a very friendly team. We take great pride in having developed our centre to provide a useful service to our Fermanagh community, and across the world.
